WORLD WAR ONE SALVATION ARMY PICTURE POST CARDS – ca. 1918 – AS PROVIDED TO THE SOLDIERS WITH THE AEF IN FRANCE:  This set of three picture post cards each feature scenes advertising the work the Salvation Army was doing for the soldiers of the American Expeditionary Force in France.  The subject matter of all three focus on the work of the “Doughnut Dollies” - one showing a smiling field equipped soldier holding his doughnut, another showing one of the Dollies wearing a helmet and offering a pan full of doughnuts, and the third showing a line of field equipped soldiers waiting in line to enter a Doughnut hut fashioned from a large tent.  There was an obvious effort made to show the Salvation Army’s efforts close to the front lines, emphasizing the service to the troops in the trenches.

The reverse of each card is printed as with any post card, with fields for addresses, but also with the admonition to donate to the Salvation Army in order to support their efforts.  These cards, provided to the soldiers who would then presumably send them home to family and friends, were not only provided as a service to the soldiers, but a sure way to advertise the organization.

The cards, measuring 5 3/8" x 3 3/8", are in amazing condition with only the most minor of wear marks here and there on the edges.  The images are bright and clear with no fading.

This a scarce offering of what must be a relatively low surviving number of these World War One Salvation Army post cards, and they would display well with your Great War collection.  (1011) $45
