IMAGE OF A WORLD WAR ONE CAVALRY COMPANY STABLE YARD AT CAMP STANLEY, TEXAS ca. 1917 WORLD WAR OR BORDER ERA MOUNTED SERGEANT DRESSED IN HIS FIELD UNIFORM AND ARMED WITH A COLT MODEL 1911 PISTOL:  This photograph of a First World War or Border Era soldier was taken at Camp Stanley.  Originally named Camp Funston and renamed in October of 1917 as Camp Stanley, the post is located northwest of San Antonio, Texas adjacent to the present day Camp Bullis.   Camp Stanley served as a training area and as an ammunition storage depot for the San Antonio Arsenal, and continues today as a weapons and munitions supply, maintenance, test and storage activity.

The reverse of the photo is inscribed in pencil "Emmitt; Camp Stanley, San Antonio, Tex".  It also bears the ink stamp of the Fox Photograph Company, no longer in business but at one time the company was probably responsible for developing 90% of all the photographs taken in the San Antonio area.

The photograph was apparently taken in a company level stable yard, showing a mounted sergeant overseeing his troopers in various stages of mounting their horses.  The soldiers are dressed in their field uniforms to include the Pattern 1911 Service Shirt Mounted Trousers, the Model 1912 Holster and Colt Model 1911 Pistol, as well as his campaign hat and leggings.  The horses are fitted with the Model 1904 Second Pattern McClellan Saddles and the Model 1904 Bridles, but interestingly all the horses appear to be bitted with just the snaffle bit, rather than the standard Model 1909 Cavalry Curb bit.  The softer bits may indicate this troop was headed out on an exercise or watering ride.

The image, measuring 5" x 3", is in very good condition with only minor pin prick sized marks on the image surface.  The upper left corner of the card has a light fold, but there is no image loss.

This a rare image of mounted cavalry going about their daily routine at a very historic army post of the years immediate to the First World War.  (1010) $35
