IDENTIFIED CIVIL WAR CLOTHING ISSUE RECORD, DATED
1864–1865 - 2 SOLDIERS AND THE COMPANY OFFICER NAMED –
95TH PENNSYLVANIA VOLUNTEER INFANTRY:
An original Civil War clothing issue record for two
soldiers of Company G, 95th Pennsylvania
Volunteer Infantry. The document, measuring 10” by
7.5”, is printed with the standard format on both sides
and each side has had the information for one soldier
entered in handwritten script in ink, detailing the
clothing issue to the soldier and the value of the
clothing during the period of his enlistment.
Originally known as the Pennsylvania Zouaves, the
Ninety-fifth, was organized at Philadelphia, in the
month of August, 1861 and served throughout the war in
the engagements ranging from Antietam through northern
and central Virginia.
On one side, the form documents the issue for Private
George C. Bear who enlisted at Reading, Pennsylvania on
March 8th, 1864. The clothing issues span
September 1864 through July of 1865. Bear signed each
entry acknowledging receipt of the clothing and his
signature was countersigned by John Williams, likely one
of the company officers.
On the opposite side, the form documents the issue for
Private Isaac Betz who enlisted at Reading, Pennsylvania
on March 5th, 1864. The clothing issues span
September 1864 through July of 1865. Betz was
apparently illiterate, as the form indicates he made his
mark, then his name was added for each entry
acknowledging receipt of the clothing and his mark was
countersigned again by John Williams.
The form is complete with no tears or loss of text.
There is one place where it appears an old piece of
adhesive tape came in contact with the paper, but none
of the text is damaged. This is a nice Civil War
document and might yield some interesting information
about these two soldiers if it was researched further.
