ORIGINAL 1848 ORDNANCE DEPARTMENT RECEIPT FOR THE
PURCHASE OF 40 DRAGOON BRIDOON BITS:
An original handwritten receipt dated January 8, 1848
from the United States to Joseph Baker, a known supplier
of horse equipment, acknowledging the receipt of the
bits and the payment to Baker for supplying 40 Curb
Bridoon Bits, which would have been the bits issued to
the U.S. Dragoons at that time.
This is the exact same
receipt quoted on page 30 in Bridle Bits of the
American Military 1776-1945 by McPheeters and
Dorsey, and cited in The American Military Saddle,
1776-1945 by the same authors, on page 370, Figures
5 and 6, and on page 376, and is direct from the authors
research collection.
The receipt further acknowledges
receipt of the bits at the US Arsenal Store and payment
being received in the Philadelphia, indicating that the
transfer took place at the US Quartermaster Clothing
Depot, the USQM having the responsibility for procuring
horse equipment for the army at that time. A scarce
period document which reflects the contract and supply
system for the early Dragoon Horse Equipment.
The
document measures 6” high and 7 ¾” wide and is in very
good condition, with a very slight separation at the
fold on the left side, and all of the handwriting bright
and fully legible. This is a prime document with rare
content to display with your early horse equipment.
