“REGULATIONS FOR THE SUBSISTENCE DEPARTMENT OF THE
ARMY OF THE UNITED STATES” – dtd 1862 – A VERY SCARCE
PRINTING WITH DETAILED RATION CONTRACT AND SUPPLY
INFORMATION: An excellent, complete original
copy of a very scarce manual that was one of the most
important publications which affected the lives and
effectiveness of the Civil War soldier, this 1862
Subsistence Department Manual provides detailed
information from the early days of the war as to the
feeding and supply of the soldiers in the field.
With both covers and all 57 pages present and intact,
this manual shows only minor aging with no dog-eared
corners or ragged edges, and a fully intact binding
along the spine.
The text covers the regulations governing the process
for contracting, purchase, transport, storage and issue
of rations, including such detail as the quantity of
issue, the types and quality of food stuffs, purchase of
livestock and produce, record keeping and
accountability. This copy was evidently in the hands of
a serving Subsistence Officer as it has a number of
annotations written in ink throughout the text,
indicating this manual was issued and was in use during
the war.
These early Civil War manuals have become quite scarce
and are seldom encountered in this condition. This is a
very nice edition to add to your Civil War or early
Subsistence Department displays.
