ARMS GAZETTE 1976 “GUNS OF THE HOSTILES” THREE
PART ARTICLE - ORIGINAL ISSUES – EXCELLENT COVERAGE OF
INDIAN USED GUNS: These three issues of the
Arms Gazette Magazine were published in November and
December of 1976 and January of 1977, featuring a
detailed three part article by R. Stephen Dorsey
entitled “GUNS OF THE HOSTILES”.
Using the extensive Rock Island Arsenal collection of
Indian used guns as the core of the article, Dorsey
delves into the manner in which firearms came into the
possession of the hostile tribes of the Great American
West as they fought for their very survival in the years
following the Civil War.
As the story unfolds, Dorsey debunks many of the myths
that continue to persist regarding the types of firearms
used by the Indians, the marksmanship of both the
soldiers and the Indians, and the characteristics of
true Indian guns. The article is well supplied with
photographs of genuine Indian used guns of all types and
makes, as well a considerable number of detailed photos
showing features of particular interest. The text is
very informative and makes for an interesting read, as
well as being a valuable reference to add to your
library. Dorsey drew from a number of primary period
sources, to include numerous quotes from contemporary
Ordnance Department correspondence. This is an
excellent reference for students of the firearms used in
the American West by the Plains tribes.
These editions are seldom available in the original
printing unless discovered in old collection holdings,
and as such, these issues are almost impossible to find
on the loose. These issues are complete and in
excellent condition with no tears or excessive
wear. SOLD
