ca. 1880’s CABINET CARD LARGE FORMAT IMAGE OF A
SADDLED RANCH HORSE – FULLY TACKED WITH A LEVER ACTION
RIFLE IN THE SADDLE SCABBARD – A SCARCE SUBJECT MATTER
IN A LARGE FORMAT: This is a spectacular
Western image of a fully tacked ranch horse, including a
lever action rifle in the rifle scabbard. These outdoor
images captured in a natural setting as a result of the
photographer taking advantage of an opportunity rather
than a staged or indoor studio setting are quite scarce,
particularly with this sort of content.
The horse is tacked out in
a high pommel and cantle, “deep seat” half seat stock
saddle of the type used on ranches and dating from the
1880’s. The quality of the saddle and the rifle
scabbard are evident and both appear to be well cared
for, reflecting a gentle sheen from being regularly
cleaned and conditioned. The horse is well
proportioned, appears well fed and cared for, and he
seems to have that wooly coat typical of range horses –
quite likely a genuine cow horse.
The image is clear and in very good condition – the only
soiling being a light ink mark running from the horse’s
left rear hoof to the bottom edge of the image. The
mounting board has some minor edge wear, but no breaks
or cracks. The reverse of the board is printed with the
legend, “This is TROT who sends best wishes and
assurances of faithfulness.”
As noted above, this is an unusually large printing of
the photograph - the image proper measures 7” high by
10” wide, and the mounting board measures 10 ¼” high by
11 ½” wide.
The combination of size and
content ensures this image will display very well and it
would be a notable addition to a collection of western
memorabilia. (0752) $225
